Buprenorphine for Detoxification and Treatment of Opiate Dependence:
Buprenorphine is a method of treatment for opiate dependence, whether a street drug – heroin, or a prescription medication – percoset, darvocet, or oxycontin.
Buprenorphine is prescription opiate medication used to treat clients (aged 16 and older) addicted to opiates whether street drugs or prescription medications. The manufacturer states Buprenorphine is not considered a mood altering chemical and the potential for dependency is small.
Buprenorphine is NOT for occasional, as needed, or recreational use.
Buprenorphine occupies the receptors in the brain the normally cause a "high" when opiates are used. Buprenorphine is used to assist in the detox process by controlling the opioid withdrawal symptoms and cravings, causes less euphoria then opiates but produces sufficient positive effects to aids in treatment compliance, causes less physical dependence than opiates, and blocks effects of any subsequently used opiates by keeping them from binding to the receptors.
TREATMENT BEYOND DETOXIFICATION IS MANDATORY. Recovery will involve hard work, commitment, discipline, and a willingness of the client to examine the effects of opiate dependence on his/her life. At first, it isn’t unusual for the client to feel impatient, resentful, angry or frustrated.
Recovery from opiate dependence is not an easy or painless process. It involves lifestyle changes, such as adopting new coping skills, making new non-using friendships, and developing a recovery support system through the 12 Step programs of AA, NA, & CA. These skills will be learned during treatment.
